Expression, excellence and creative pathways
The Arts in the Senior School offer rich opportunities for creative expression, personal growth and future pathways. Whether pursuing artistic excellence or seeking balance alongside academic study, students are encouraged to explore their interests deeply and develop their unique talents in a supportive and inspiring environment. Through Music, Drama and Visual Arts, girls are challenged to think creatively, take risks and express their ideas with confidence.
Confidence Through Creativity
Beyond developing artistic skills, participation in the Arts nurtures collaboration, communication and resilience, helping students build confidence both on and off the stage, in the studio and beyond the classroom. Through performances, exhibitions and creative projects, girls discover the power of creativity to connect with others, enrich their wellbeing and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
Music that builds connection
Music is a longstanding strength at St Catherine’s. All students study Music in Year 7, with elective options from Year 8 and HSC pathways in Music 1, Music 2 and Extension Music. Up to 30 ensembles provide opportunities to perform at school events, community functions, eisteddfods and international tours, helping students expand their musical skills, while also building discipline and teamwork. Many students also take private tuition in our Dame Joan Sutherland Centre, which includes rehearsal rooms, practice studios, a recording studio and specialist teaching spaces.
Drama that inspires confidence
Drama encourages students to find their voice, tell stories and take creative risks in a supportive and professional environment. Offered as an elective from Years 8-12, Drama consistently delivers strong academic and performance outcomes. Students work in our Drama Studio and Dr Julie Townsend Theatre, contributing to all aspects of theatre making, including performance, design and production. Annual productions and showcases provide vibrant opportunities for collaboration and creative expression.
Art that shapes imagination
Visual Arts invites students to see the world differently, take creative risks and communicate ideas with confidence. Compulsory in Year 7 and elective from Year 8, the program builds technical skill and creative thinking. Strong links between visual learning, literacy and problem solving support students as they develop artistic confidence and prepare for further study or personal enrichment.
