Creativity, confidence and joyful expression
The Performing and Visual Arts are an important part of Junior School life at St Catherine’s. Through music, drama and visual arts, girls are encouraged to express themselves, explore new ideas and develop confidence in a safe and nurturing environment.
Finding their unique voices
Guided by specialist teachers, students discover creative outlets that support imagination, communication and self-expression. Along the way, they learn that creativity is not simply about performance or artistic skill, but about curiosity, exploration and finding their unique voices.
Music that builds connection
Music plays an important role in developing listening skills, coordination and teamwork. In Years 2 and 3, students participate in a strings program, choosing violin, viola, cello or double bass. In Year 4, they explore a full range of orchestral instruments, including wind, brass and percussion.
Choirs and ensembles provide opportunities to perform at school and community events, helping girls develop confidence and a strong sense of accomplishment. Students may also undertake private lessons across a wide range of instruments, voice, composition and music theory, with opportunities to complete internal St Catherine’s examinations or external assessments through AMEB and Trinity College London.
Drama that inspires confidence
Drama is a compulsory part of our Performing Arts curriculum and provides a creative platform for students to explore ideas, stories and the human experience. Through practical lessons and productions, girls experiment, ask questions and engage with a variety of theatrical styles. These experiences build communication skills, empathy and resilience, supporting confidence both on stage and in everyday life.
Art that shapes imagination
Visual Arts provides students with expert guidance as they build creative confidence and technical skill. Girls explore a wide range of materials and techniques while learning to take creative risks, reflect on their work and communicate ideas visually. Strong connections between visual learning, literacy and creativity support problem-solving, critical thinking and imaginative thinking.
