Seven girls from the junior school competed in the PSSA state athletics championships at Homebush on Wednesday 6 November and Thursday 7 November. They competed against girls from both public and independent schools from across NSW, so the standard was extremely high. Ruby was the first St Catherine’s girl to run and placed 11th overall in the state in the 1500m. Sienna ran a great heat and made it into the 200m semi-final placing 12th overall, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Olive placed 28th overall in the 8 years 100m, which was a great performance at her first ever state championships.
The 4 x 100m junior relay team consisting of Sarah, Caroline, Zoe and Roxie ran on the Thursday. The heat was the first race of the day and the girls ran an absolutely amazing race of 57.60 to break the state record! Remarkably, the previous record was held by the 2013 St Catherine’s relay team, whose time was 57.61. The girls easily won the semi-final, to qualify for the final, where they ran an incredible race and placed second overall gaining themselves a silver medal. The junior athletics team has been training since the end of Term 2 and this outcome was simply incredible and a reflection of their hard work and training. Well done girls.
