Headmistress' Welcome

Welcome to St Catherine’s.  I am delighted you are visiting our website, and hope it gives you a good insight into our educational philosophy and practice.

Today's children are being educated for a world very different from ours. It is a world where global understanding and technological competence will be expected, and where the most successful will be creative, confident, disciplined and networked. High levels of education will be important, but not enough.

Which is why we want our girls to have a first-rate education, and be confident in their knowledge and skills. But we also want them to be women of character, imbued with the moral and emotional strength to deal with life's challenges and rebound from its setbacks. And we want them to be women of compassion, who have the desire and capacity to improve the world they inherit.

With that in mind we, of course, offer a broad, challenging, academic curriculum, along with the huge array of the sporting and cultural pursuits you would expect from a school like ours. But we go beyond that. In the firm belief that "character is destiny", we also focus on the character development of our girls.

We offer a comprehensive academic care program that draws heavily on the principles of positive psychology. We work to develop each girl's sense of self-efficacy and develop the character traits that enable this, such as hard work, self-control, grit and adaptive thinking. Complementing this is our service education program, which helps girls to see how they can make a difference to their local and global community.

We very much encourage our girls to see themselves as global citizens. We offer six languages – European, Asian and Classical and encourage every girl to study at least one to HSC level. With many opportunities for international visits and exchanges, we encourage girls to develop their cultural and global competencies by getting out into the world and experiencing its beauty and challenges. And every girl from Year 5 has a tablet computer, giving her access to a world of resources and contacts.

We do all this in the context of our Christian framework, welcoming girls of all backgrounds and abilities, and valuing each child for the contribution she makes to the life of the school.

I hope you enjoy exploring this website.  I also hope you come and visit us.  You will then see our philosophy translated into practice, our beautiful grounds, first-rate facilities, dedicated staff and gorgeous girls. And you will see how we aim to develop girls who are, in the words of our vision statement, 'secure in their character, confident in their abilities, respectful in their manner, and equipped to make their unique contribution to the world'.
