Scholarships

St Catherine's School is committed to providing a wide range of financial assistance to the families of girls who would not otherwise be able to afford a St Catherine's education for their daughters.
 

Scholarships are available for 2011 in the following categories:

  • Aboriginal
  • Academic
  • Country
  • Music
  • Science
  • The Jane Barker Scholarship is available every alternate year and is available for 2011.

Those applying for any scholarship in 2011 need to show their interest in the School by submitting an Application for Enrolment Form. Those not registered will not be considered for a scholarship.

Aboriginal Scholarships for 2011
Applications close: Friday 19 March 2010
Examination date: Monday 29 March 2010.

Aboriginal Scholarships are offered to students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background for the secondary years of schooling. Applicants are required to sit the Profile Exam, at the School, on Monday 29 March 2010.

Application forms should be accompanied by:-

  • copies of school reports from the past two years
  • copies of any awards or certificates
  • a letter written by the applicant herself, in her own words, giving reasons for applying for the scholarship and outlining her own present and future goals
  • Basic Skills Test results for Grade 5 for students applying for Year 7
  • NAPLAN test results for students applying for Years 8 - 10
  • School Certificate results for students applying for Years 11 and 12.

Selected students will be invited to an appointment at St Catherine's School where applicants and their family will be interviewed by the Headmistress.

Consideration will be given to academic progress, commitment to study, and participation in co-curricular, and other school and community activities.

St Catherine's is a friendly school that includes girls from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. We have a number of students of indigenous background throughout the School.

 

Academic Scholarships for Secondary Education, Year 7 Entry
Applications close: Friday 19 March 2010.
Examination date: Monday 29 March 2010.

Academic Scholarships, covering full or part tuition fees, will be awarded to students presently enrolled in Year 6 at St Catherine's School and to girls wishing to enter the School in Year 7 in 2011. Results of the examinations, together with information provided by students, will determine the successful applicants.

Country and ICPA Scholarships for Years 7 - 11 Entry

Since its establishment in 1856 as a Boarding School for the Daughters of Clergy, St Catherine's School has been supporting the education of the daughters of country families. These Scholarships are for students joining St Catherine's School as boarders and reflect our commitment to providing outstanding educational opportunities for girls from rural areas.

The Scholarships cover tuition fees for the years of secondary education; however, boarding fees are the responsibility of the family. Scholarships usually provide full remission of tuition fees to the end of Year 12, but under some circumstances may be awarded for part remission of fees. It is a condition of the scholarship that the recipient remains a boarder for the duration of her time at St Catherine’s. Scholarship holders are expected to contribute fully to the life of the School, maintaining excellent standards of behaviour and a high level of commitment to their studies.

Students applying for entry to Year 7 should sit the Academic Scholarship for Entry at Year 7. Students applying for a scholarship for entry to other years should sit our Profile Examination. Both examinations will be held at St Catherine's School on Monday 29 March 2010.

Scholarships are awarded based on the Scholarship or Profile Examination results and on the applicant's potential to contribute to the St Catherine's School community. The financial situation of applicants will also be taken into account. Please supply to the School the details and documentary evidence that you consider will assist the Scholarship Committee in making an assessment of your financial situation. It should include a statement from your accountant about your financial position and/or your last tax assessments. This may be done prior to the Examinations. All information will be treated confidentially and any documents will be returned when the selection process is complete.

Music Scholarship for Secondary Education, Years 7 - 11 Entry

Examination date for Academic examination (Year 7): Monday 29 March 2010.
Examination date for Profile examination (Years 8-11): Monday 29  March 2010.
Audition dates: Tuesday 4 May and Wednesday 5 May 2010.

St Catherine's School has a long tradition of promoting excellence in Music through our Scholarship Programme. Music Scholarships are offered for entry to Years 7 to 11. Scholarships may be for full or part remission of tuition fees to the end of Year 12. Scholarship holders are expected to study Music in their academic programme and contribute fully to the musical life of the School, as a member of at least two ensembles. They should maintain excellent standards of behaviour and a high level of commitment to their studies.

Students intending to enter the School in 2011 are invited to apply to sit our internal Scholarship Examination to be held at St Catherine's School on Monday, 29 March, 2010. All Year 7, 2011 scholarship applicants must sit the Academic Scholarship for Secondary Education examination. All Scholarship applicants for Years 8 - 11 2011 will sit the Profile Examination.

Applicants for a Music Scholarship should have a high level of development on an instrument, generally at least AMEB Grade 4 or its equivalent, and have demonstrated commitment to Music over a number of years.

For 2011 we are particularly interested in candidates who present on cello, bassoon or low brass.

Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of audition, with reference to the Scholarship Examination results. Those called for audition will be required to present two contrasting pieces on their preferred instrument. Candidates may choose to present an additional piece on a second instrument. They should provide their own accompanist, if needed. The audition will also include sight reading and aural tests.

Applicants short listed for a Scholarship will be interviewed by the Headmistress.
 
Recipients will be expected to undertake a Music subject for the Higher School Certificate.

The Fielding Scholarship for Science for Year 11 Entry
Application close: Friday 19 March 2010.
Examination date for Profile examination (Year 11 only): Monday 29 March 2010.

St Catherine's School has been promoting excellence in Science through the Fielding Scholarship for Science established by a bequest from Miss Ruth Fielding. Miss Fielding and her four sisters were students at St Catherine's between 1900 and 1918.

The Scholarship may be for full or part remission of tuition fees to the end of Year 12. Scholarship holders are expected to study two Sciences in their academic programme and promote interest in scientific events and endeavour within the School community. They should maintain excellent standards of behaviour and a high level of commitment to their studies.

Students applying for the Fielding Scholarship for Science should sit our Profile Examination to be held at St Catherine's School on Monday 29 March 2010.

Applicants for a Science Scholarship should have the expectation of gaining an A Grade for school achievement and a Band 6 in the School Certificate Science Test. They should have demonstrated exceptional ability and interest in scientific enquiry. Recipients will be expected to undertake two Science subjects for the Higher School Certificate: any two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of the Profile Examination and student application, and any offer will be provisional on the student gaining the required School Certificate Results.

Applicants short listed for a Scholarship will be interviewed by the Headmistress.

The Jane Barker Scholarship

The Jane Barker Scholarship is offered each alternate year to the daughter or granddaughter of a St Catherine's Old Girl, entering Years 7 to 11, who would not otherwise be able to attend the School.

Students intending to enter the School in 2011 are invited to apply to sit our internal Scholarship Examination to be held at St Catherine's School. All Year 7 2011 scholarship applicants must sit the Academic Scholarship for Secondary Education examination. All Scholarship applicants for Years 8 - 11 2011 will sit the Profile Examination.

Scholarships usually cover full remission of tuition fees to the end of Year 12.

Applicants must be Australian citizens.
